Student Experience

Welcome to the Students' Union page! Here you will get a brief insight into what goes on in St Mary's Students' Union.

What is the Students' Union?

The Students’ Union is a democratic organisation, which represents students at both national level and locally, in the College. Students have the chance to vote for their choice of sabbatical and non-sabbatical officers, and the Student’s Union goes on to be part of the National Union of Students-Union of Students Ireland (NUS-USI).

We have a wide range of responsibilities, including:

  • Providing student welfare assistance
  • Academic representation
  • Supporting clubs and societies
  • Financial advice and assistance
  • Providing opportunities to develop your own skills and capabilities
  • Represent the Student Body on the Board of Governors
  • Running your biggest student nights out

Where is the Students' Union?
The Students’ Union is now situated beside the brand new Beechmount Dining Hall and the Student Lounge area. Feel free to drop in at any time for a chat - our door is always open for you! Here in the SU, our phones and computers are always active, so if you can’t pop in for a chat, you are welcome to remotely contact us.

Who runs the Students' Union?
The Students’ Union Executive is the group who runs the Students’ Union. This includes two full-time sabbatical officers, the President and Vice-President, who are paid salaries from the Students’ Union budget. There are also ten non-sabbatical officers, who are full-time students in the college.

The Students’ Union have an excellent working relationship with college staff, Student Services, and the wider community.

Student Services Co-ordinator
Working closely with the Students’ Union are Deirdre Cree, the Student Guidance and Support Co-Ordinator, and Ruairí Wilson, the Student Support Officer. They work to ensure the needs of all students are met and catered for. Both Deirdre and Ruairí are very friendly and welcoming and will always be available to help students–no matter how big or small the problem might be.
