Teaching Profession ProjectSeminar 2 - Pedagogy in Irish Medium Education Tuesday, 7th December 2021, 4.30pm
St Mary’s University College is set to host the second in a series of free online seminars in regard to its recently launched Teaching Profession Project (TPP). On Tuesday, 7th December at 4.30 pm, Conall Ó Máirtín ( BBC Gaeilge and Associate Lecturer at St Mary’s University College) will chair a panel discussion on Pedagogy in Irish Medium Education. Conall will be joined by: Fionnuala Ní Mhealláin (Bunmhúinteoir, Bunscoil an tSléibhe Dhuibh, Béal Feirste); An Dr Seán Mac Corraidh (Léachtóir Sinsearach, Coláiste Ollscoile Naomh Muire, Béal Feirste); and Caitlín Ní Ruanaidh (Ceann Roinne agus Teagascóir do Mhúinteoirí Nuacháilithe, Coláiste Feirste). The discussion will be in the medium of Irish with subtitles in English. The seminar will begin with a brief outline of the research guiding Irish-medium teachers. The panel will discuss the most effective strategies and resources for supporting children to learn in the target language. Panelists Conall Ó Máirtín - (Cathaoirleach) - BBC Gaeilge agus Coláiste Ollscoile Naomh Muire, Béal Feirste Conall graduated in Law and as a postgraduate in ICT with Law at QUB, Belfast. He successfully completed the Irish Medium PGCE at St Mary’s University College, Belfast. In 2012, he gained an MA in Modern Irish at Ulster University, Belfast. He taught in the Irish Language Unit at St Catherine's College, Armagh between 2016 and 2017 and is now a content producer and a presenter with BBC Gaeilge with a focus on Information Technology and Irish.
Fionnuala Ní Mhealláin - Bunmhúinteoir, Bunscoil an tSléibhe Dhuibh, Béal Feirste
Fionnuala has twenty years experience working in the Irish Medium sector. She has been a teacher in Bunscoil an tSléibhe Dhuibh since 2005 and coordinates the Arts there. She is chairperson of Féile Scoildramaíochta Bhéal Feirste. She has published some resources in conjunction with CCEA - Draíocht le Drámaíocht, Fonn le Filíocht and Canaimis. She gained a post-graduate certificate in Irish Language and Literature from QUB. She also graduated from St Mary’s University College, Belfast with a Masters Degree in Education and Irish. She has a PQH qualification as well. She is raising her family in Belfast with Irish. She is a member of Aontas na Scríbhneoirí Gaeilge and has great interest in poetry and short stories.
An Dr Seán Mac Corraidh - Léachtóir Sinsearach, Coláiste Ollscoile Naomh Muire, Béal Feirste Dr Seán Mac Corraidh is a senior lecturer at St Mary’s University College, Belfast where he is coordinator of the Irish Medium and Irish Language Enhancement Course for Irish Medium PGCE students at QUB and Ulster University, along with colleagues from those two institutions. He lectures in Irish Language and Literature, Curriculum and Education Studies, including Immersion Education and the Personal and Professional Development of student teachers. His doctoral work was published under the title Ar Thóir an dea-chleachtais: The quest for best practice in Irish Medium Schools in Belfast in 2008. He has published articles and booklets with colleagues on the subject of the upcoming Webinar including, Bitesize Advice on Learning and Teaching in Irish Medium Education, which was published also in 2008.
Caitlín Ní Ruanaidh - Ceann Roinne agus Teagascóir do Mhúinteoirí Nuacháilithe, Coláiste Feirste Caitlín graduated with a BA (Hons.) degree in Irish and History from NUI Galway. She went on and gained a post-graduate qualification in journalism on An Cheathrú Rua campus of Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge of NUI Galway also. Later she qualified with a PGCE from the School of Education at the University of Ulster. She continues to enhance her professional learning and is presently undertaking a masters level MEd degree at St Mary’s University College, Belfast. Teaching through the medium of Irish, she taught in Coláiste Oiriall in Monaghan Town for two years and now does the same in Coláiste Feirste, Belfast where she is head of the History Department and teacher tutor to the newly qualified teachers in the school, educating, guiding, and advising them. |
