Our 5th National Literacy Conference (in association with UKLA) is entitled "Reading for Pleasure and Independence" and was held on Friday 16th April. This exciting and inspiring event focused on the significance of children and young people reading for pleasure and independence. It explored ways to motivate, engage and foster both choice and voice in our classrooms.
Two keynote speakers - Prof Teresa Cremin, The Open University and Mrs Susan Ellis, University of Strathclyde, delivered engaging and challenging lectures. In addition to this there were four great workshops covering a range of contemporary themes.
This professional development opportunity aimed to enable participants to have the opportunity to:
- Profile reading for pleasure alongside the skill
- Examine ways to build communities of readers
- Engage with classroom activities that promote independence and choice
- Reflect on the implications of a range of literacy practices
- Browse and buy books from the UKLA bookshop.
